    Plaquenil retinal toxicity symptoms

Suddenly I'm experiencing eye problems (blilnd spots). I have stopped taking plaquenil, but now I'm being told by doctors that the damage is not necessarily reversible especially if you have taken it for a long time.

Aug 29, 2014 The side effect that is of greatest concern is retinal toxicity. Retinal toxicity of Plaquenil may manifest itself with subtle disturbances of the retinal pigment epithelium which may eventually lead to complete destruction of the macula in the form of bull’s-eye maculopathy. Eye damage due to Plaquenil is not common,” he says. “Rarely will anybody who has good vision and minimal symptoms develop loss of central vision or ability to read if annual screening is done and visual are symptoms reported as soon as they occur so the medication can be stopped if toxicity occurs. This condition does not cause symptoms and is reversible with cessation of the medication. The finding of corneal verticillata bares no correlation with retinal toxicity and is not an indication to stop the medication. The hallmark of hydroxychloroquine toxicity is bilateral pigmentary retinopathy. Patients with early retinal findings are often asymptomatic despite having subtle paracentral scotomas.

My mother was diagnosed with Plaquenil Toxicity in 2007 she first noticed changes in 2006, although being followed by her eye doctor they failed to notice this as Plaquenil TX until it was to late. I'm hoping to find people who have recovered from the eye damage.

In the early stages of HCQ maculopathy, patients are usually asymptomatic. Early symptoms may include difficulties reading, color-vision disturbance, or scotomas. Clinical Findings. Anterior segment. Hydroxychloroquine can cause deposits in the corneal epithelium. This finding is uncommon and is reversible with the cessation of drug use. Symptoms.
