Aralen chloroquine is a Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug DMARD that is widely used to reduce inflammation pain and swelling in the treatment of many types of arthritis and lupus. Aralen is also known as a treatment for malaria, a disease caused by a blood-borne parasite and spread by mosquitoes in many tropical and sub-tropical. It is also occasionally used for amebiasis that is occurring outside the intestines, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus erythematosus. It is taken by mouth. Common side effects include muscle problems, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and skin rash. Arava leflunomide affects the immune system and reduces swelling and inflammation in the body. Arava is used to treat the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.

Lupus & Plaquenil/Pain - Plaquenil does help with some of the symptoms of Lupus, but it does take a few weeks to start helping. It's most important role is to inhibit progression of the disease -- I'm really surprised you haven't been on it ever since the Lupus was diagnosed.
