Chloroquine phosphate, 250 mg twice daily, or hydroxychloroquine sulfate, 200 mg twice daily, was administered for a period of 6 to 21 months. Patients had regular clinical evaluation, determination of serum and cerebrospinal fluid angiotensin-converting enzyme level, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, chest radiography, lung function testing, and slit-lamp examination of the eyes.

Plaquenil and small fiber neuropathy I used Plaquenil years ago for extreme muscle and joint issues and it seemed to work fine. All my issues were resolved over a years time on low doses. Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can take up to six months' constant use before an effect is seen in RA 1. The latter is related to drug accumulation in melanin-rich tissues. 15,16 Prolonged treatment with chloroquine also can cause toxic myopathy, cardiopathy, and peripheral neuropathy and neuropsychiatric disturbances; all of these reactions improve if the drug is discontinued promptly. 17,18 Both chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine should be used.

Magnetic resonance imaging with gadolinium was most helpful in supporting the diagnosis of sarcoidosis and monitoring the course of the disease. Chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine either stabilized symptoms or controlled neurological symptoms in 10 of 12 patients. Cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities, including lymphocytosis, were seen in 3 patients.

What Eye Problems and Conditions Are Associated With Lupus? People with lupus can get retinal vasculitis, which limits the blood supply to the retina, which can have significant effects on vision. The eye then attempts to repair itself, but when the retina tries to repair itself it forms new blood vessels which can form in areas of the eye that can impair vision.
